The Litchi Tree
is located in the Diego Suarez
area in the Northern
region of Madagascar
Set in the small military town of Joffreville, this simple guest-house is one of the best bases from which to explore the Montagne d'Ambre National Reserve.
The lodge is centred on a 1902 bungalow which has been lovingly restored by welcoming owner and Herve Dumel and contains the main lounge and dining areas. Herve is also the chef and is renowned for producing some of the best food on the island.
Guest accommodation is in just six pleasant rooms, contained within various converted outbuildings.
Activities include guided walks into the reserve to experience the areas wonderful endemic flora and fauna, including several species of lemur, the world's smallest chameleon, a wide range of birds and some stunning rare orchids.
Access is by road, usually as a stop on the overland journey from Nosy Be to Diego Suarez. The usual stay duration is one or two nights only.
The main potential downsides at The Litchi Tree are the difficulty of access, the shortage of availability, the intimacy of the lodge, the outdoorsy and subtle nature of the activities, with the main animals being relatively elusive.
