The Retreat at Groenfontein
, also known as Groenfontein Retreat, is located in the Calitzdorp area of the Little Karoo in the Western Cape in South Africa.

Set in a private valley leading up to the Swartberg Nature Reserve around 20km northeast of Calitzdorp, this beautiful Victorian farmstead offers high quality Karoo hospitality.

The lodge benefits greatly from the fact that hosts Marie and Grant spent many years running safari lodges in Namibia and Botswana. Evening meals are a real event, personally hosted on a single large table and featuring fine farmhouse cooking. Accommodation is in just eight rooms, four lower cost ones in the main farmhouse, plus two pairs of larger rooms in two separate buildings.

The main activity is hiking on a network of gentle to medium trails, the highlight of which is definitely swimming in the rockpools at the head of the valley. Day trips are also possible to Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves, as well as over the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert, but we usually recommend forgetting the car and simply relaxing around the farm.

The Retreat at Groenfontein is definitely one of our favourite lodges in the Little Karoo, undeniably quirky, but a real treat which tends to particularly appeal to experienced safari travellers.
