Tulear to Cap Sainte Marie

...

... is located in the Southern region of Madagascar.

This area covers the beaches south from the town of Tulear.

The southwest corner is the driest, least inhabited and least accessible part of the country. It is a landscape of dry spiny forest, featuring many species of cactuses and baobab trees. Although not as immediately alluring as the verdant forests of the north, these dry forests also contain a wealth of endemic species, especially reptiles.

The coastline is one of of broad sandy bays and rocky promontories explosed to the southerly winds. These remote beaches are where shards of eggshell from of the extinct elephant bird can still be found.

Around 40km south of Tulear lies the pretty Veza fishing village of Anakao. The offshore islands and reefs here contain some great snorkelling and diving. The best accommodation is at Anakao Ocean Lodge and Eco Lodge Lalandaka.

Around 50km further south on dirt tracks lies the impressive Lake Tsimanampetsotsa national reserve, with spiny forests, baobabs and caves to explore, usually as a daytrip from the north.

The remaining 300km of coastline and much of the interior is the territory of 4x4 expeditions and very intrepid travellers only. Although there are areas of significant interest, here is very little in the way of accommodation.
