Tulear to Morombe
is located in the Southern
region of Madagascar
The RN7 highway arrives at the coast from the Isalo
area to the northeast and turns north to enter this area or south for Anakao
Tulear, also known as Toliara, is the main town on the southwest coast of Madagascar, lying at the end of the main RN7 highway from the central highlands.
This coastline is fringed by coral reefs as rich and varied as any on the island. But the landscapes here are a great contrast to the verdant forests of the north and east. This is a very dry area, with open dunes being backed by characteristic spiny flora.
Tulear itself is a rather uninteresting place and most visitors head directly to the smaller villages to the north and south. The best accommodation in the area is Bakuba Concept Hotel
and Le Caliente Beach
, both out of town to the south.
Around 25km to the north the twin villages of Ifaty and Mangily contain a string of beach lodges and dive bases, the best of which is Les Dunes d'Ifaty
A further 60km further north, between the villages of Tsiandamba and Salary, and lodges are much more widely separated. The best here are Ankasy Lodge
and Salary Bay
Another 60km further north the scenic villages of Andavoaka and Ampasilava are much more remote and the quality of diving is considerably better. The best accommodation is at the relatively simple Laguna Blu Resort
and Manga Lodge
