is a large quarter of land located in the extreme south-east corner of Botswana
, bordered by to the east by Zimbabwe
across the Shashe River and to the south by South Africa
across the Limpopo River.
It is an excellent private reserve, a surprisingly wild and beautiful area, being largely unfenced and surrounded by other tracts of wilderness and protected reserves.
The wildlife is reasonably prolific, with elephants, lions and leopards topping the bill.
The lodges here offer an unusually broad range of safari activities including vehicle safari, walking safari, mountain hiking, horse-back safari, mountain-bike safari and night vehicle safari.
The area is also considered to have a low malarial risk and some people apparently visit during the dry season without taking anti-malarial prophylaxis. It is certainly more wild than the non-malarial areas of Madikwe
and the Eastern Cape
, all of which are fenced and stocked.
However the area is dominated by rather old-fashioned camps, none of which we rate particularly highly. There is definitely room for improvement.
We also feel that the area suffers from rather moderate safari guiding. We have been particularly disappointed in the past with the way the guides have failed to manage vehicles on lion and leopard sightings. You really should not be exposed to traffic in a reserve which contains only a handful of vehicles.SeasonsAccommodationTrips
