is an important gateway town set alongside the Orange River on the N14 highway, 750km west of Johannesburg
and 400km east of Springbok
in the Northwest
of South Africa
The town is very much the gateway to the Kalahari. It is surrounded by a vast and arid wilderness, with routes heading north to the Kgalagadi
and Southern Namibia
, south into the Great Karoo.
The town is surrounded by heavily irrigated agricultural land, mainly vineyards, although the lush greenery does little to alleviate the searing summer temperatures. Although pleasant enough, Upington is generally only used as an overnight stop. Le Must Residence
... is probably the best accommodation, a relatively upmarket boutique hotel back onto the main river.Le Must Manor
... is a sister facility and to a similar quality.
