Victoria Falls Town
is located in the north-west of Zimbabwe
, at the the border crossing to Zambia
The falls themselves, known locally as "The Smoke that Thunders", were first visited by explorer David Livingstone in 1855 and comprise the largest waterfall in the world as measured by the surface area of the sheet of falling water.
A visit to the falls is surprisingly interesting and impressive. In addition there is a whole host of other activities on offer, some of which are really very good, notably the white-water rafting.
The main potential downsides are that the falls possess an incredibly strong magnetic attraction to first time visitors to the continent, making this a rather busy and mainstream location, there are some very mediocre hotels in the area and some very tacky safari activities on offer. The weather can also be really quite adverse October to February.ActivitiesSeasonsAccommodationTrips
