area of the Western Cape
region of South Africa
The town of Wellington used to be a very pleasant and historic rural settlement, surrounded by some of the finest vineyards in the region.
These days however, the area to the south of town in particular has been blighted by urban development. We understand the need to provide housing in the area, but the way it has been done here has all but completely destroyed the character and appeal of the area. The road north from Paarl
to Wellington the main road is lined virtually continuously by 12km of modern townships.
Beyond this development, especially to the east, there remain some decent relatively interesting places to stay, although most are having increasing difficulty in maintaining their status as truly rural retreats.
We very rarely recommend properties in this area, in preference to the much better preserved village of Franschhoek
